So, without any further delay, let’s get started.

1. Give Every Student’s Role To Fulfill

Most of the time students feel comfortable while they’re in the group. Now, to ease up the situation for students, the teacher can assign different particular roles to each student during group discussions to encourage them to have a conversation with good flow.

While assigning roles to each student make sure to observe them closely and whether they are fulfilling their roles as you have instructed or not. Make sure to create a supportive and comfortable environment so that every student can actively participate in the group discussion.

2. Ensure Every Student's Participation is Necessary

It’s every classroom story that whenever a group discussion has been conducted only a few students are willing to actively participate and other students just being present to fill up the obligation that teachers have given them.

To improve student engagement and participation in group discussions, every teacher needs to establish certain rules that promote an inclusive environment and active participation from every student. Instead of focusing on how students should behave or talk during group discussions, you can make them focus on much more important rules like-

  • Listening to other students' points of view without interruption.

  • Research topics well, before expressing your thoughts.
  • Learn to agree to disagree without getting agitated.
  • Presenting a point of view calmly.

3. Create a Collaborative Environment

When you’re considering conducting group discussion, as a teacher you need to keep in mind two points to create a perfect environment for group discussion,

i. To create a Collaborative Environment

ii. Think about a topic that requires a different perspective where the whole group's contribution can come into play.

By applying this method you will make sure that students will work together to research the topic and learn from each other insights while they are discussing the topic which will ultimately create a collaborative environment.

4. Review Their Group Discussion Performance

Nowadays, students have a habit of finding shortcuts for every task. While you’re assigning any topic to have a group discussion, let your students prepare points by writing, and they shouldn’t copy each other notes or take help from the internet and once they are done with their writing they can start the group discussion.

Once they are done with group discussion, let each and every student know what they have done right in group discussion and what they need to improve more.

5. Make Your Students Habituated With Using Academic Vocabulary

In general, students have a habit of having a conversation in everyday and informal language. As a teacher, you must set a rule that every student needs to adapt to using academic language while writing and speaking.

You can set a routine for every student to read, annotate, and engage with the content of academic journals, teacher boards, etc for 10-15 minutes before starting the day of class. This will improve the vocabulary and speaking skills of students by engaging daily with academic content.

6. Connect Classroom Discussions to Real-World Problems

To make classroom discussions more meaningful, it is beneficial to connect them to real-life problems or involve global and local audiences. By leveraging real-world issues, you provide students with a purpose for their discussions and create opportunities for them to apply their knowledge in practical contexts.

Prompt students to analyze how the problem relates to the learning happening in the classroom, encourage them to seek solutions and explore the effectiveness of different approaches. By connecting classroom discussions to real-world problems, students can develop critical thinking skills and become active contributors to their communities.
