How To Be A Pro In Classroom Management?

16th February 2022

The job of a teacher is really not an easy one. Gone are the days when teaching means coming to school or any other educational institution in time, delivering lectures, and checking assignments. The duty of a teacher in this era is beyond the regular traits of a teaching job as the world has seen. These days teachers are playing the role of counselors as well and coming up with ideas that are comforting students to a great extent.

Classroom Management:

While taking care of students and continuously monitoring their growth rate, another important task that teachers are performing is called classroom management. Classroom management is nothing but making students understand to follow certain behavioral patterns and norms so that the discipline and other values of the school remain consistent. Teachers and school administrators contribute a lot in inculcating these values in the learners.

The process of classroom management is nothing lesser than risk management in school. Before we jump into the steps of managing risks in school, we must learn what are the 4 components of classroom management. In order to motivate the students, there should be a balance provided to them both intrinsically and extrinsically. 4 components that make this process of balancing super smooth are Autonomy, Competence, Relatedness, and Relevance.

Classroom Management

Components of Classroom Management:

Autonomy: Students are given the liberty to choose certain assignments like home tasks or projects and this gives a feeling to them that their decisions also matter a lot. For example, students are given multiple choices and among those, they have to choose a particular topic. They also get the privilege to choose their group members. Over here, they develop innovative ideas to deal with the assignment they have chosen and ultimately they come up with classic solutions.

Competence: Constant guidance and supervision is required for the students so that in the path of developing solutions for problems they do not go on the wrong track. Hence, feedback from teachers and other supervisors is mandatory. Also, once students start getting motivation and appreciation from the teachers their confidence level gets boosted. The main motto of this step is to execute the strategy students have prepared in an accurate manner.

Relatedness: It is always important to have a cordial relationship between teachers and students. The scene where a teacher holds the hand of his/her fellow students and guides them to become successful is absolutely breathtaking. It is hard to find such pure bonds these days and hence if a student is getting such blessings and love it must be considered precious.

Relevance: It is the sheer responsibility of teachers to connect real-life scenarios and the academic syllabus of the educational system. Thus, students will understand how the syllabus is supposed to help them in real life and this, in turn, will help them to grow better in the future.

But there is a basic difference between classroom management and classroom control. Learn this basic difference in a second!

Having said so, I would like to mention certain steps by following which teachers and school administrators can do proper classroom management. This procedure will ensure a safe and secure environment in a classroom.

Steps To Have A Safe And Secured Classroom Environment:

  • Teachers must make sure that all classroom exits, both doors, and windows remain clear from obstructions and clutter.
  • It must be made clear that during any classroom decoration or fixing anything, ladders must be used. Students or any other person who will be in charge of these decorations should never step on a chair to do such kind of job.
  • Decorations must be hung properly and one should avoid hanging things from light fixtures and sprinkler heads. Blocking exit signs or obstructing any exits with your decorations is definitely unwanted.
  • Hazardous materials, such as cleaning supplies and chemicals used for instruction, should be properly labeled, securely stored, and kept out of the reach of students. Safety data sheets addressing how to properly treat exposure to hazardous materials should be made easily available.
  • Make sure electrical cords are not running through high-traffic areas, walkways, and doorways. Electrical Circuits should not be overloaded and plugging two extension cords or two surge protectors together should not be done.
  • When setting up a classroom, rearranging things, or moving heavy items like textbooks, use safe lifting techniques to avoid injury.
  • An evacuation plan near the door must be ensured during the emergency.
Keeping Classroom Safe and Secured

Nonverbal Interaction:

Besides keeping a classroom safe, teachers must use their skills and apply techniques to keep things in organized manner. To keep students focused and to let the ambiance fall into pieces, certain methods must be applied. It is not always necessary to scold or rebuke students if they do any mistakes because harsh rebukes often make a kid stubborn and the impact is absolutely adverse. Instead, it can be explained why such a step will harm them down the line along with relevant examples.

Let’s say while teaching an important topic you can spot a child not paying attention and is engrossed in something else. A nonverbal intervention like staring at the student or doing any gesture will let the kid understand that he/she is losing track. Thus, a teacher can get the entire focus of the class without any disturbances.

Positive Group Correction is another affirming verbal reminder that lets a group of students know what they should be doing. Other approaches like Anonymous Individual Correction, a verbal reminder that is directed at an anonymous student. A Private Individual Correction is a reminder that is given to an individual student as discretely as possible. However, Lightning-Quick Public Correction is a quick and positive reminder that tells an individual student what to do instead of what not to do.

Therefore, such methodologies if applied at the correct time to the right person can get half the job done. An International teaching diploma certificate enclosed all these classroom management tips for teachers. They can learn the nitty-gritty of how to take care of students and manage the classroom by keeping everything in order.
